Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is no typical Southern belle. She can read minds. And she's got a thing for vampires. Which, in a town like Bon Temps, Louisiana, means she'll have to watch her back-and neck...

Quick Fun Read, 2010-07-29
by typesettertrend
While there are a lot of inconsistencies between the novels, and a few typographical errors that got missed in editing, that is easily overlooked by just the sheer fun of reading these novels. While on the surface they seem like a light read, and are read quickly (I was clipping along reading 1 each night after work)--Sookie is an admirable heroine, one we're not used to seeing. The power of being a Southern Woman is manifest in her--she loves men, is fiercely independent, and determined to make her own way and do the right thing, despite struggles. Harris does a good job, too, of incorporating the class, race, and gender issues that are troubling the South and making them food for thought for our characters, to highlight their differences, and show that people are far more than a stereotype. This was unexpected for me. As I do cultural analysis of almost everything I read and see, it was a welcome and interesting aspect of an otherwise "light" read. I started reading these because of the True Blood series. There are a lot of differences, and enough similarities, of course, to make me love them both. Fun read, and highly addictive. I'm about to start "Dead and Gone" tonight and have already ordered "Dead in the Family." I'm very pleased that Harris seems eager to continue on with Sookie, as she is such a complex and compelling lead.
Kindle boxed set is costly mistake!, 2010-07-27

My issue is not with the books; it is with the Kindle version.

I assumed the Mac Kindle version of this boxed set would be 8 files -- 1 per book.

Unfortunately, it's one big file. I've not found a way to break them apart by book. Under "Go To." the "Table of Contents" link is really a listing of the book titles; I've not been unable to find individual tables of contents for each book.

Had I known this was going to be on big file, I would have bought the Kindle version of each book.

I plan on never buying a Kindle boxed set again. Normally, I'm a very loyal Amazon customer, but this -- added to the fact that Kindle for Mac has no search/find feature -- makes we want to buy an iPad and use iTunes.

This is a great series! I have become totally immersed in this 8 book series which is well worth the price I paid. If you have seen the television show then you need to read these books, gives you some background to the characters and who they really are. Definitely worth looking into.
Love the Stackhouse series, 2010-07-25

I had a hard time getting into the first two books. I was wondering what all the fuss was about but then Club Dead (book 3) had me hooked. I read through Dead in the Family and A Touch of Dead (the short story novel) with in two weeks. Can't wait for Book 11! In the meantime, I have been looking for another fantasy type series but haven't found anything nearly as addictive.
